Add a border in three settings
This tool draws a frame around your picture with three settings.
- Border width, from 1% to 25% of the image’s longest side. Using a percentage keeps the frame in proportion: 5% looks the same on a phone photo and on a 24-megapixel camera file.
- Border color, white by default. Pick black for a gallery look, a brand color for social posts, or a soft gray or cream for prints.
- Thicker bottom (Polaroid style), which makes the bottom edge four times as thick as the others.
The border is added around the image, never on top of it, so no part of your photo is lost. The preview shows the final pixel size below it.
How big the result is
The border is calculated once from the longest side, then applied to every edge, so all sides are equal (unless the Polaroid option is on). Example for a 3000 × 2000 photo:
| Border width | Border in pixels | Final size | With Polaroid bottom |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2% | 60 px | 3120 × 2120 | 3120 × 2300 |
| 5% | 150 px | 3300 × 2300 | 3300 × 2750 |
| 10% | 300 px | 3600 × 2600 | 3600 × 3500 |
Because the frame grows the image on all sides, the aspect ratio changes slightly. If you need an exact shape, such as a square post for Instagram, use Make Image Square, which pads the photo to a square with a background color instead.
When a white border helps
- Instagram and social feeds: a thin white border separates your photo from the app’s interface and makes a grid of posts look consistent.
- Prints: a white margin around a print leaves room for a mat or a thumb. Keep in mind that the border changes the shape of the image, so check it still matches your paper with the standard photo print sizes guide.
- Comparisons and collages: framing each photo before combining them gives clean gaps; Side by Side Photos can also add the space between pictures for you.
- Instant-photo style: the Polaroid option with a white or off-white color gives a nostalgic, handwritten-caption feel.
For a softer frame, combine this with Round Corners: round the corners first, then add the border, and the rounded picture sits on the colored background.
Formats and privacy
You can open JPG, PNG, WebP, AVIF, GIF (first frame), BMP and SVG, as well as HEIC photos. JPG, PNG and WebP are saved in the same format (JPG and WebP at 92% quality; a browser that can’t save WebP, such as Safari, gets PNG instead); HEIC and AVIF are saved as JPG, and SVG, GIF and BMP as PNG.
The border is drawn with your browser’s canvas, on your device. There is no upload, the page works offline once it has loaded, and the output is rebuilt from pixels, so metadata such as GPS location is not copied into it.
